North and South Food Habits and Openions
The common point of argument among friends from two parts of the country is the food and the language. Most of the people would have realized this thing. A South Indian whenever goes to a hotel looks for a rice item to eat, on the other hand a North Indian prefers roti and some curry. This becomes a point of discussion (most of the time) when people from both part of the country sit together to eat.
The first and the foremost thing to remember is that the food habits in any region is majorly based on the availability of ingredient and the climatic conditions. Best example is Punjabi lassi.
The people from the northern part of India think south means Idli, sambar and rice in food and think that south Indians are called as Madrasi's. Ya its also true that there are lot of people who actually know what south India is and they have a fair idea about the culture of south India. And most of the south Indian think north India as the Hindi Speaking region eating roti and curry. Major portion of the south Indians think that POTATO will be the basic ingredient in any north Indian dish. All this is false. Because even south Indians use potato and there are variety of dishes other than Sambar in South India.
Now this is my opinion that people should take the flavors of each region as they are. If one wants to stick with their regional food even when they are in the other part of the country, then what is the use of being there. Ya of course there are certain ingredients which one will not like so the food prepared using those will not be liked by such people is understandable. But there are a set of people who behave as if eating the food of other part of the country is sin or is not of standard is something silly and childish. Now let me give my personal experience, i have tasted the vegetarian food of North India (not all) and also South India (most of). Even though i like the food i don't feel like having it in my regular diet because that does not satisfy me like the rice and sambar does. But on some odd days i like to have that food to have a change in taste. Being open for different tastes will definitely make the life exiting and enjoyable.
